As education counsellors, we often meet students who are influenced by negative reels and social media posts claiming that there are “no jobs” in countries such as Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, Germany, and others.

The reality is that social media rarely presents the complete picture. People who successfully secure jobs, build careers, and establish themselves abroad are usually focused on their professional growth. They rarely post about their everyday success. Meanwhile, individuals facing challenges are more likely to share their experiences online, creating the impression that opportunities no longer exist.

The latest available international unemployment data tells a different story:

CountryUnemployment Rate
India5.5%
Sri Lanka4.30%
Nepal10.47%
Nigeria3.06%
Germany3.8%
France8.1%
United Kingdom4.9%
Australia4.3%
United States4.3%
Canada6.5%
Ireland4.6%
New Zealand5.3%

If these countries truly had no employment opportunities, unemployment rates would be dramatically higher. Instead, millions of people are employed, businesses continue to expand, and employers actively recruit skilled professionals.

The Real Question Isn’t “Are There Jobs?”

The real question is:

“Do candidates possess the skills employers are looking for?”

This is where overseas education creates real value. It helps students develop:

A Realistic Perspective

Studying abroad is not a guarantee of employment. It is an opportunity to acquire the education, skills, experience, and professional network that significantly improve a student’s employability.

Every country has competition, economic cycles, and changing labour market demands. Success ultimately depends on an individual’s skills, adaptability, work ethic, language proficiency, and career planning.

Our Responsibility as Education Counsellors

As education counsellors, our responsibility is to guide students with facts—not fear. We should help them set realistic expectations, make informed decisions, and invest in developing the skills that employers genuinely value.

Rather than being influenced by selective social media content, students should focus on building strong qualifications, gaining practical experience, and preparing themselves for long-term career success.

Facts Over Fear. Skills Over Hype. Career Success Through Preparation.
